The Rocky Mountain Junior Science Contest was created due to the lack of science competitions compared to Canada's plethora of math contests.

The RMJSC has two purposes—to give and to inspire. We strive to provide opportunities for junior high students to demonstrate their theoretical and practical knowledge of the sciences. In addition, our team envisions inspiring our contestants; to make this vision a reality, we created challenges that allow students to experience the fascinating nature of biology, chemistry, and physics. The RMJSC also allows junior high students to prepare for the daunting transition into high school, which may be burdensome and confusing for some students. We achieve this by emphasizing the creative applications of learned concepts, a key skill for success in the high school classroom; we challenge our contestants in a variety of contexts, from thoughtful design challenges to thrilling trivia rounds. Each round of the contest is designed to educate, entertain, and encourage youth to live up to their scientific potential. Youth are our future—inspiring and aiding them on their journey will make a better world.
The 6th Annual RMJSC - Presented by ARC
Date: Sunday, March 30th, 2025
Time: 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM
Location: University of Calgary - ICT 114
Grades: 7-9 - Anyone in Grades 9 or below are welcome to attend, however this contest is mainly intended for middle school as many components are taken from the Alberta Grades 7-9 curriculum.
The RMJSC is a multi-round STEM competition aimed towards testing junior high-level concepts to prepare students for the PAT examinations in Grade 9 (though younger students are still eligible to participate!)
Format:
Contestants will compete in teams of 3 over 3 rounds to test different skill sets. The first round will be the practical or applications round. This will consist of six questions introducing higher-level science concepts and will be marked based on how well teams can use the new knowledge. The second round will be a fast-paced trivia-type round. Contestants must answer questions as quickly as possible, and points are awarded for speed and accuracy. The last round will be a design round, in which contestants will need to build a structure with given materials to fulfill a requirement. Points will be awarded based on how well they can meet the requirements.
- The contest will primarily test on content relating to biology, chemistry, and physics. A formula sheet will be provided as the main aim of the contest is to test students on their ability to apply problem-solving skills and apply their knowledge, rather than just memorizing content
- The RMJSC contest is designed for teams of 3 people, but solo participants are allowed, and we will try our best to make fitting groups to accommodate them into groups of 3. Registration is on a first come first serve basis.
- Free snacks and lunch will be provided, with accommodations for dietary restrictions
This event is organized by high school students who were past high-scoring PAT test takers and are currently scoring well on the Grade 12 Diploma examinations.
