Rocky Mountain Junior Science Contest
.png)
The Rocky Mountain Junior Science Contest was created due to the lack of science competitions compared to Canada's plethora of math contests.

The RMJSC has two purposes—to give and to inspire. We strive to provide opportunities for junior high students to demonstrate their theoretical and practical knowledge of the sciences. In addition, our team envisions inspiring our contestants; to make this vision a reality, we created challenges that allow students to experience the fascinating nature of biology, chemistry, and physics.
Each round of the contest is designed to educate, entertain, and encourage youth to live up to their scientific potential. Youth are our future—inspiring and aiding them on their journey will make a better world.
The 7th Annual RMJSC - Presented by ARC
Date: May 24th, 2026
Time: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Location: University of Calgary - HNSC 122
Grades: 7-9 - Anyone in Grades 9 or below are welcome to attend, however this contest is mainly intended for middle school as many components are taken from the Alberta Grades 7-9 curriculum.
The RMJSC is a multi-round STEM competition aimed towards testing junior high-level concepts to prepare students for high school content while challenging their applied science reasoning skills.
Format:
Contestants will compete in teams of 3 over 3 rounds to test different skill sets. The first round will be the laboratory applications round. This round will consist of a demonstration at first followed by each group creating a lab report. Included in the write up are questions made to challenge understanding and relate results to real-world problems and solutions.
The second round will be a slower-paced, thorough design-type round. Contestants must personally design solutions to challenges presented, ranging from physical, hands-on work to designing accurate, practical labs. Points are awarded for logical justification and creativity. This round emphasizes the importance of innovation.
The last round will be a written-relay round, where participants must work with their teams to quickly solve problems. This round is about the fundamental understanding of sciences such as biology, chemistry, and physics, and solving abstract problems using core ideas or inferring information from limited details. Formula sheets will be provided.
The contest primarily tests on content relating to biology, chemistry, and physics. A formula sheet will be provided as the main aim of the contest is to test students on their ability to apply problem-solving skills and apply their knowledge, rather than just memorizing content.
The RMJSC contest is designed for teams of 3 people, but solo participants are allowed, and we will try our best to make fitting groups to accommodate them into groups of 3. Registration is on a first come first serve basis.
Free snacks and lunch will be provided, with accommodations for dietary restrictions!
